Whether in the city or the countryside, for short or long trips, e-bikes have become a popular way to get around. However, in general they are much more expensive than traditional bicycles. E-bike insurance is a sensible way to protect your e-bike against various risks. A household contents basic policy covers the theft of your e-bike from your home or garage. With the supplemental bicycles, e-bikes and sports equipment module, the cost of damage that occurs while you are out and about is also covered.
AXA’s e-bike insurance can be added to your household contents insurance to insure your e-bike, bicycle or other sports equipment against the following risks and damage:
AXA’s e-bike insurance not only covers your own bicycle and sports equipment, it also protects that of all the insured members in the same household. Your partner, your children or your housemates – all the people living in your household can benefit from the comprehensive protection offered by bicycle insurance.
The cost of AXA’s e-bike insurance depends on various factors, such as the sum insured that you select and the deductible.
AXA’s e-bike insurance offers comprehensive protection, but there are certain situations in which it does not provide coverage. For example, the policy doesn’t normally cover damage to cycling gear (with the exception of helmets). Normal wear and tear or age-related damage is not covered, unless it is the result of an accident or an insured event. Naturally, damage that you cause intentionally isn’t covered either.
AXA’s e-bike insurance covers not only a broad range of risks but also a wide variety of electric bicycles. These include:
Accessories such as batteries and displays that are integrated into the e-bike as well as normal bicycles and sports equipment are included in the insurance coverage.
For certain models, e-bike insurance alone is insufficient to cover damage that you cause to others with your e-bike. An example of one such model is the S-pedelec, which is a high-speed e-bike with pedal assistance up to a speed of 45 km/h and power output of up to 1,000 watts. Since this e-bike is considered to be a motorized bicycle, it is subject to special legal requirements, including the obligation to take out motor vehicle liability insurance. This insurance covers damage that you and your S-pedelec cause to third parties, for example, if there’s an accident. An S-pedelec must also have a yellow license plate and a vignette to prove that it is properly insured. If you don’t have this insurance, you may not use an S-pedelec on public roads.
For slow e-bikes that provide assistance up to a maximum 25 km/h , no motor vehicle liability insurance is required. In this case, sufficient protection is provided by normal e-bike insurance together with personal liability insurance, which covers most of these claims.
Your insured e-bike doesn’t have to be a new one. You may also insure a used e-bike with AXA. The insurance coverage for a second-hand e-bike is, as a rule, the same as for a new one, including protection against theft, accidents and vandalism. However, the policy only covers damage that occurred after the insurance was taken out.
