FAQs on basic insurance and the health insurance fund switching service

  • What is compulsory basic insurance?

Health insurance is compulsory for persons residing in Switzerland.  The scope of the benefits provided is regulated by law. Insured persons pay a monthly premium for basic health insurance that is calculated based on their age, the region in which they live, and their choice of insurance model.

  • What basic health insurance models are there?

The four most common basic insurance models are:

    Standard model

The basic type of compulsory basic insurance is the standard model, also known as the traditional model. With it, you have a choice of doctors, bus also pay the highest premium

    General practitioner model

As the name suggests, under the general practitioner model you first have to contact your general practitioner. Exceptions to this rule are gynecological preventive examinations, eye doctor checkups, and emergencies.

This is the model most frequently chosen by insured persons in Switzerland.

    HMO model

An HMO practice consists of physicians, specialists, general practitioners, and therapists who provide medical treatment. Those insured under this model have to contact their HMO practice first, but benefit from lower premiums.

    Telmed model

Under the Telmed model, your first point of contact is the telephone consultation hotline of your statutory health insurance provider. If necessary, they will refer you to a doctor’s office or a hospital.

  • How can I reduce my health insurance costs?

The greatest potential savings lie in switching regularly to the most affordable basic insurance. You lose no benefits by doing this. Although the benefits are regulated by law and are exactly the same for all basic insurers, premiums sometimes differ significantly.

If you opt for supplementary health insurance from AXA, we will find the cheapest basic insurance for you every year – and we also take care of the paperwork thanks to our free health insurance fund switching service.

  • Can I terminate my basic insurance cover without already having a new one in place?

As the name implies, compulsory health insurance is mandatory for everyone residing in Switzerland. So, if you decide to terminate your current health insurance, you must register with a new health insurance provider before the end of the year.

  • What advantages does AXA’s health insurance fund switching service offer me?

In addition to our attractive range of supplementary insurance products, we can assist you in your free choice of a basic health insurance provider. We don’t offer any basic insurance ourselves, but help you find the best solution in terms of price each year. To ensure our advice is unbiased, we don’t receive any commission on basic insurance.

  • When can I terminate my basic health insurance?

The following deadlines apply for switching your basic and supplementary insurance and for adjustments to your insurance:

    Deadline for switching basic insurance

    • November 30: Termination of current basic health insurance at the end of the year
    • December 31: Sign up with the new basic health insurer at the start of the year

Deadlines for adjustments to basic insurance (without switching health insurance fund)

    • November 30: Lower your deductible and/or switch to a standard plan at the start of the year
    • December 31: Raise your deductible at the start of the year
    • On the first of any month: Switch from the standard basic health insurance plan (choose your own doctor and excess of CHF 300) to an economy plan

    Supplementary insurance deadlines

    • August 30 (recommended): Apply to the supplementary health insurer you have chosen at the beginning of the year
    • September 30: Terminate your current supplementary insurance at the end of the year
    • On the first of any month: Apply for supplementary insurance products (new health assessment)
  • What excess should I choose?

The ordinary excess defines how much of your covered  healthcare costs you pay yourself. As an adult you have six options ranging from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500. The higher your excess, the lower your insurance premium and vice versa. A tip: Choose either the highest or the lowest excess. You can change your excess at the end of each year.
