Individual product details: benefits overview and contractual provisions.
Supplementary dental insurance or dental insurance covers costs for dental treatments that are not covered by compulsory basic health insurance.
It is advisable if you want to receive regular dental treatment from the age of 20. Because basic insurance only covers accidental tooth damage, while supplementary outpatient insurance usually covers orthodontic treatments up to the age of 20. After this, only private dental insurance covers the costs of treatment by a dentist or dental hygienist. With this insurance, you save on dental check-ups, dental hygiene, and root canal treatments – and are protected against high costs.
There are three different AXA dental treatment insurance options:
Coverage/options | Dental 1000 | Dental 2000 | Dental 3000 |
Dental treatment and correction of tooth misalignments | 50% up to CHF 1000 per year | 75% up to CHF 2000 per year | 75% up to CHF 3000 per year |
Dental hygiene and bleaching | 50% up to CHF 200 per year | 75% up to CHF 300 per year | 75% up to CHF 500 per year |
Maximum amount reimbursable per year | CHF 1000 | CHF 2000 | CHF 3000 |
Dental hygiene: Professional teeth cleaning involves removing tartar and checking your gum health.
Bleaching: Is a dazzling white smile important to you? You can lighten your teeth with bleaching.
Check-up: During a check-up, the dentist checks the health of your teeth, the condition of fillings, and whether prostheses are still positioned correctly.
Orthodontics: The dentist checks whether these is any misalignment of the teeth or jaw, and these are corrected, e.g. with dental braces.
Dental prosthesis: Prostheses such as crowns and bridges may be necessary for many different reasons, such as an accident or caries.
The costs and cover depend on the option you choose. In principle, AXA's insurance covers between 50 and 75 percent of the costs for dental hygiene, bleaching, orthodontic treatments, etc. The maximum cover amount is CHF 3000 per calendar year.
Dental insurance in Switzerland is worthwhile for anyone who wishes to take advantage of supplementary dental benefits. Depending on age group, the focus is on different benefits.
Children and adolescents primarily benefit from AXA's co-payment for orthodontic measures. For example, the supplementary dental insurance for children covers part of the costs for dental braces. It is therefore worth taking out dental insurance as early as possible – before the child's fifth birthday. If it is taken out later, you will need a dentist's certificate stating whether there are already any misalignments, missing teeth, or similar.
Adults primarily take advantage of benefits such as bleaching and dental hygiene, which are not covered by basic insurance. Regular, professional teeth cleaning is recommended to prevent dental diseases and tartar. Bleaching is aimed at people with tooth discoloration who want to lighten their teeth. In both cases, if you use these services regularly, it makes sense over the long term to have the costs covered by supplementary health insurance.
As we get older, dental diseases such as periodontosis, caries, and others become more frequent – but you can help prevent them with regular hygiene treatments. Supplementary dental insurance is therefore also worthwhile for older people. With AXA, you can take out dental insurance up the age of 65 and benefit from attractive benefits.
Dental and orthodontic treatment can quickly become very expensive and is often not covered by basic health insurance. By contrast, supplementary dental insurance covers a portion of these costs every year.
Specifically, this means that AXA’s supplementary dental insurance pays a portion of all dental costs you incur, e.g., for prostheses, root canal treatments, preventive examinations, dental hygiene, orthodontic treatments, etc.
The scope of cover depends on the AXA product chosen (supplementary Dental Insurance 1000, 2000, or 3000).
The waiting or qualifying period for dental insurance is usually six months. You can avoid this if you switch from equivalent dental insurance with another insurer to AXA. In this case, the qualifying period is waived and the supplementary dental insurance is active immediately.
In principle, it is too late to take out supplementary health insurance if treatment has already started. However, it is possible under certain circumstances.
