Why it makes sense to have bike insurance

Whether you’re looking into a top-quality mountain bike, racing bike or the latest e-bike – a new bike can cost you quite a bit. So if your bike is stolen or damaged, not only is this frustrating, it’s also an expensive loss. Bike insurance, which you can take out under the add-on module bicycles, e-bikes and sports equipment, is therefore an important form of protection in this regard as it insures you against the financial consequences of damage or theft. Household contents insurance provides partial coverage for bicycles. But if you want comprehensive protection against theft in public places or against damage, then our add-on insurance makes sense.

Here are some figures to show you just how important it is to have an adequate sum insured in these cases: AXA paid out CHF 2,100 in each case in 2023. Three years before this, it was just CHF 1,450. Thefts in Switzerland are on the rise, and bikes are becoming increasingly more expensive.

Bike gets stolen, insurance pays

Even if your  household contents insurance  provides some protection for your bike, it does not offer full coverage.  If you expand your household contents coverage with the AXA bicycles, e-bikes and sports equipment add-on module, your sports equipment will be fully covered.

Liability insurance for your bike

Another key aspect is  liability insurance  for bikers. Whenever you ride your bike, you’re at risk of accidentally causing damage to others. You might crash into a pedestrian and injure them. Or have an accident that damages a vehicle. Without the right insurance, you could end up paying for all this.

Typical claim scenarios

Theft in front of your office:  You park your expensive e-bike in front of your office building and lock it to the bicycle stand. Despite this precaution, your e-bike is stolen while you’re at work. You report the theft to the police and submit the necessary documents to AXA. Thanks to your expanded bike insurance, you’re quickly reimbursed for the new value of your stolen e-bike.

Accident on the street:  While biking downhill in the rain, you go into a skid and crash. The front wheel of your bike is severely damaged and the frame is badly scratched. AXA pays for the repair of the front wheel and the frame. Because you have bicycle and e-bike assistance, you can have your bike fixed in a repair shop and be back on the road again in a jiffy.

Vandalism during an event:  You attend a major outdoor event and park your bike in the designated parking area. After the event, you discover that your bike has been deliberately damaged – the saddle is cut up and the tires are slashed. Here too, AXA will pay for replacement parts and repairs.

Frequently asked questions about bicycle insurance

  • Is my bike insured under my household contents policy?

Yes, your bike is covered under your household contents policy, but the coverage is often limited. Household contents generally only covers a stolen bike if it’s stolen from inside your apartment or from a locked enclosure such as a basement or garage. Losses caused by accidents, vandalism or theft in public spaces are generally not covered under a basic household contents policy.

  • What is the difference between bicycle, e-bike or pedelec insurance?

As far as insurance goes, there is generally no difference between insuring a bicycle, e-bike or pedelec.

  • What damage does bike insurance cover?

AXA’s bike insurance is an add-on module consisting of various components that you can use to expand your household contents coverage:

    • Theft: Reimbursement for the present value or new value of your bike if it’s stolen.
    • Accidental damage: Payment for repairs after an accident, such as if the tires, frame or brakes are damaged.

    • Vandalism: Payment for repairs or replacement costs for damage caused by vandalism, such as slashed tires.
