Basic insurance only covers medical emergencies, and not necessarily all of these costs either. In countries with very high medical costs, such as the US, there may be gaps in cover.
An example: During your vacation in the western US, you are taken to hospital with severe stomach pains. You are diagnosed with appendicitis, making it necessary to operate immediately. Costs: CHF 60,000 However, the basic insurance only covers up to twice the amount the operation would have cost in your canton of residence. There, the cost of the appendectomy is approximately CHF 6,700*. The basic insurance therefore pays approximately CHF 13,400 of the total cost. You will be required to pay the remaining CHF 46,600 yourself.
*This is an estimate and may differ due to various factors. Examples of potential factors include secondary diagnoses or complications.
The benefits of travel insurance are concentrated on cancellation costs and vehicle/personal assistance. In many cases it does not cover medical costs, the cost of visits by a relative or close friend, or the cost of curtailment or delayed return due to a health problem.
An example: During your vacation in the Japanese Alps, you take advantage of the fantastic powder to enjoy an extended ski tour. Amid the unspoilt natural landscape you experience severe chest pain – the first sign of a heart attack. Fortunately you're not on your own: Your companion organizes a rescue mission and you are taken to hospital. In this example, the rescue and recovery costs as well as the cost of transportation to hospital are covered by the travel insurance policy. However, your travel insurance does not cover your medical expenses.
Some credit card providers do cover travel risks. However, you should always study the terms and conditions as well as the benefits. Major differences exist between the various providers as well as between types of credit card (standard, gold, platinum). In addition, in all cases you will only be insured if you have used the credit card to pay for most elements of your trip; what's more, there is often a limit on the maximum duration of the trip. It's best to check the details of the cover provided by your credit card with the credit card provider.
Medical costs in non-EU/EFTA countries vary sharply, and are particularly high in the following countries:
For example, treatment for a stroke in Switzerland costs approximately CHF 9,000*, as against approximately CHF 18,000 in Singapore.
