The AXA Women’s Super League (AWSL) starts its second half of the season after the winter break and the excitement could hardly be greater.
At the end of the first half, Servette FC Chênois Féminin leads the table with 30 points from 13 games. Close behind are FC Basel 1893 with 28 points and FC Zurich with 26 points. BSC YB Women holds fourth place with 24 points, followed by FC St. Gallen 1879 with 22 points. The difference in points between the first and fifth place winners is therefore only 8 points, which promises a close race for the coveted spots in the playoffs.
Due to heavy snowfall in November, several games of the 12th round had to be postponed, including games of FC Basel 1893 and FC St. Gallen 1879. As a result, these teams have only played 12 games, while all the others have already played 13 games. The postponed matches will take place on February 2.
At the end of the regular season in March, the AWSL plans a playoff phase in which the top eight teams compete for the championship. Starting this season, the playoff final will be played like the European Cup, with a first and second leg. As a result, the match-up will no longer take place in a neutral location, but in front of the home crowd of both teams in the final. Marion Daube, Director of Women’s Football at the Swiss Football Association, explains: “Two games increase sports legitimacy, as the stronger team usually prevails over two games.”
The head coach of BSC YB Frauen, Imke Wübbenhorst, has been on maternity leave since the end of November. During her absence, Rolf Kirchhofer, the sports director of YB-Frauen, will temporarily take over as head coach. Wübbenhorst plans to resume her position in mid-March 2025.
The second round of the AXA Women’s Super League promises exciting games and unforgettable moments. Women’s football is in the spotlight with the introduction of the new playoff system and the upcoming UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland. Be there and support the players on their way to success.
