What is supplementary dental insurance?

Supplementary dental insurance or dental insurance covers costs for dental treatments that are not covered by compulsory basic health insurance.

It is advisable if you want to receive regular dental treatment from the age of 20. Because basic insurance only covers accidental tooth damage, while supplementary outpatient insurance usually covers orthodontic treatments up to the age of 20. After this, only private dental insurance covers the costs of treatment by a dentist or dental hygienist. With this insurance, you save on dental check-ups, dental hygiene, and root canal treatments – and are protected against high costs.

Who should take out supplementary dental insurance?

Dental insurance in Switzerland is worthwhile for anyone who wishes to take advantage of supplementary dental benefits. Depending on age group, the focus is on different benefits.

Supplementary dental insurance for children

Children and adolescents primarily benefit from AXA's co-payment for orthodontic measures. For example, the supplementary dental insurance for children covers part of the costs for dental braces. It is therefore worth taking out dental insurance as early as possible – before the child's fifth birthday. If it is taken out later, you will need a dentist's certificate stating whether there are already any misalignments, missing teeth, or similar.

Supplementary dental insurance for adults

Adults primarily take advantage of benefits such as bleaching and dental hygiene, which are not covered by basic insurance. Regular, professional teeth cleaning is recommended to prevent dental diseases and tartar. Bleaching is aimed at people with tooth discoloration who want to lighten their teeth. In both cases, if you use these services regularly, it makes sense over the long term to have the costs covered by supplementary health insurance.

Supplementary dental insurance for people over 50

As we get older, dental diseases such as periodontosis, caries, and others become more frequent – but you can help prevent them with regular hygiene treatments. Supplementary dental insurance is therefore also worthwhile for older people. With AXA, you can take out dental insurance up the age of 65 and benefit from attractive benefits.

FAQ on supplementary dental insurance

  • Why do I need dental insurance?

Dental and orthodontic treatment can quickly become very expensive and is often not covered by basic health insurance. By contrast, supplementary dental insurance covers a portion of these costs every year.

Specifically, this means that AXA’s supplementary dental insurance pays a portion of all dental costs you incur, e.g., for prostheses, root canal treatments, preventive examinations, dental hygiene, orthodontic treatments, etc.

The scope of cover depends on the AXA product chosen (supplementary Dental Insurance 1000, 2000, or 3000).

  • Is there a qualifying period for supplementary dental insurance?

The waiting or qualifying period for dental insurance is usually six months. You can avoid this if you switch from equivalent dental insurance with another insurer to AXA. In this case, the qualifying period is waived and the supplementary dental insurance is active immediately.

  • Is it possible to take out supplementary dental insurance retrospectively after the start of treatment?

In principle, it is too late to take out supplementary health insurance if treatment has already started. However, it is possible under certain circumstances.

  • What dental treatments does basic health insurance cover?

Basic health insurance only covers treatment of severe disorders of the masticatory system or of dental injuries due to accidents.

For all other costs, such as routine dental visits or professional teeth cleaning, you need supplementary dental insurance.

  • At what age should I take out supplementary dental insurance?

You should preferably take out dental insurance as early as possible – because, once you have insurance, it can never be canceled.

In the case of children, it is advisable to take out dental insurance with AXA before the age of five. Up to that age, you do not have to present a dentist’s certificate, giving information on the condition of the child’s teeth.

  • Does the supplementary dental insurance also apply abroad?

Treatment close by in neighboring countries (within 20 kilometers of the Swiss border) is covered by the dental insurance, provided the foreign dentist has undergone scientific training that is equivalent to Swiss training.
